Buena Beis Obituary

Buena M. Beis
Buena M. Beis, 94, passed away September 22, 2015 at the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center of natural causes. She was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 23, 1921 to Glenn and Edna Greer. At age two, they moved to nearby Oakwood where Buena graduated from Oakwood High School in 1939. She received her Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Dayton in 1943 and began her 10 year career there with Brother Lackner registering the Veterans returning from the War.
During that time, a student, John Beis from Sandusky, asked if she would like to meet his older brother who would be visiting from Akron. Buena married George A. Beis at Holy Angels Church in Dayton on October 3, 1953 and moved to Akron where he had started his career at B.F. Goodrich. A year later they welcomed their daughter Sara. Upon retirement, they moved to Columbia, SC to be near John Beis and family, then on to Florida. When George passed away in 1991, she moved back to Dayton to reconnect with her UD and Oakwood friends. In 2009, she moved to an independent apartment at the Village of St. Edward in Akron to be close to Sara and her husband Ron and to the corgis - Dillen and Catie.
Buena was the dedicated sportswoman as a fan and participant. She loved watching football - college and the NFL and the GOLF Channel. She was a Browns fan until she switched her allegiance to the Steelers when her friend from UD Chuck Noll became their coach.

She was an avid golfer and bowler - and bridge player. She was the first woman to score a Hole-in-One at Valley View Golf Course. In 1966, she began her volunteer scoring career at the PGA Tournament at Firestone CC. and continued this work at the American Golf Classic, World Series of Golf, and later Bay Hill.
A woman who valued friends - new and old - she continued to hand write notes each year to those on her Christmas card list. Volunteering was a hallmark of her life - including Twigs and Friends of Children's Hospital of Akron. Most recently, she has continued serving by knitting baby blankets for Christ Child Society.
Buena was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Edna Greer. She is survived by her daughter, Sara Beis and son-in-law, Ron Smetana of Akron; sisters-in-law, Barbara Beis of Columbia, SC and Frances Beis of Halifax, Nova Scotia along with nieces and nephews - across the country.
The family wishes to thank the staff of 4200 at AGMC, the Hospice Care Center, Dr. Joseph Meli, and Debbie Helmkamp for their help in caring for Buena.
