CUYAHOGA FALLS. Cathy Resick Leighton, 61, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2014, from cancer. She grew up in Kent, Ohio and attended Kent State University School, Kent Roosevelt High School, and Kent State University for undergraduate and graduate school. Cathy retired from the Hudson School District in 2012 after 35 years as a teacher and school guidance counselor for several schools in the district. Her favorite occupation, however, was as mother and grandmother.
Preceded in death by her father Matthew Resick,Cathy will be greatly missed by her husband and best friend of 39 years, Joe Leighton; daughters, Lindsey Leighton Sobeck (Jeremy), Cara Leighton; son, Jeremy Leighton (Brenda); and her three grandchildren, Maurin Leighton, Leighton Sobeck, and Benson Sobeck; mother, Lovina Resick, 94; brother, Thomas Resick; sister, Patricia Resick, their spouses and children.
Cathy collected 400 antique irons and loved going to flea markets and shows where she might make a great find. Last year she was the president of the Pressing Iron & Trivet Collectors of America. She loved Tai Chi and practiced it for many years up until the past few weeks. She was also an avid golfer and played Mah Jongg with three good friends, depending on the season. Cathy and Joe traveled widely and she was happy to have visited all 50 states and several countries.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd St., with Rev. Becki Bowan-Verbridge officiating. Interment at Northampton Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Cathy appreciated the great care and attention she received by the Cleveland Clinic over the past 14 years.
