Courtland Livingston Hungerford

Courtland Livingston Hungerford, of Akron, died quietly at home on September 17, 2021.

Court was born in Cuyahoga Falls to Florence and Courtland Hungerford on August 29, 1925.

He was an active member of the Boy Scouts and enjoyed many summers at Camp Butler and later Camp Manatoc where he earned his Eagle Scout and eventually served as a Boy Scout Leader. He worked on the Waterfront Staff and at age 14 was tapped to give the Pledge of Allegiance at the dedication ceremony of the Rubber Bowl in August of 1940. He attended Cuyahoga Falls High and began studies at Kenyon College in January 1943 and joined the Navy V12 V5 Program at Denison College in July 1943 to become a Naval Pilot. During his time at Denison, he met Jean Adele McIntosh, daughter of Hazel and John McIntosh, in one of his classes. Jean recognized the name Hungerford – having met Court’s younger sister, Patricia in a tap-dancing class that she had participated in with her sister Hazel Lou.

His Naval duties took him to Ottumwa, IA for Tarmac duty, Iowa City for flight school and finally to Corpus Christi, TX, where he completed his training. He said in one week he earned his wings, his commission as an Ensign, and his discharge – as WWII ended. He returned to Ohio where he married Jean Adele McIntosh in September of 1947 and the couple started married life in Gambier, Ohio, while Court finished his College degree at Kenyon. Court was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

The couple then moved to Boulder, CO, and Court built a home by hand, working evenings after his day job with Firestone. Their first daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1950.

Two years later, the family moved back to Akron. Their second daughter, Roberta, was born, and he built the family’s second home. Court was hired by Roadway where he worked himself out of a job tracking tires on the trucks. His next job was with North Akron Savings and Loan where he worked until retirement. He said he was proud of his work there and of the bank’s community involvement. It earned the bank a great deal of respect in the community.

He helped start the Akron Ski Patrol which later joined with the Cleveland Ski Patrol to offer first aid services to Boston Mills and Brandywine Ski Slopes. He was an active ski instructor, and Red Cross Instructor.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church before transferring to First Congregational Church and then The Bath Church – participating in their ‘Breadwinners’ pastoral care program.

He loved to sail and be on the water. He was very handy, and he built his own canoe, a harpsichord and several pieces of furniture.

Until Covid-19 shut down the restaurants, he enjoyed attending monthly lunches with his classmates from Cuyahoga Falls High School.

He loved to travel. Court and Jean had wonderful road trips and river cruises all around the lower 50 states, later the couple traveled to Alaska and Hawaii. Overseas travel took them to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, the Panama Canal, England, Scotland, Wales, and Russia.

They loved their time on the shore, especially time spent on Hilton Head, where they were often joined by family and friends.

Court continued to travel with his two daughters, Rebecca and Roberta (aka Jennifer), after Jean passed in August 2013, just shy of the couple’s 66th anniversary.

He leaves behind the broken hearts of his two daughters; grandchildren, John (Melissa) Winters, Emily Winters, and Ian (Molly) McKelley; great grandchildren, Margaret Jean Winters, and Flynn McKelley; nieces, Patricia Lupia and Barbara Pryde; nephews, Robert (Arlene) Pryde, John (Joie) Pryde, and all of their families.

Court was kind, loving, and had a winning smile that drew you in. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a joy to be with. A great dad, a loving husband, a good friend, teacher, and mentor. We were all so blessed to have him in our lives.

Inurnment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
