Nicholas D. Goshen, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army

U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas D. Goshen, age 40, died on September 6, 2022 while deployed to Eastern Europe with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) stationed at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania.

Nick was born in Akron, Ohio on October 26th, 1981, the youngest of three children born to David Goshen and Rosalie Adams. He grew up in Silver Lake and spent his childhood running through the woods behind his house with his brother and sister, enjoying summer days at Crystal Lake, and going on annual family fishing trips to Lady Evelyn Lake in Canada. 
From the early age of 12, Nick knew he wanted to be in the military and took his studies and athletics seriously. Nick began to fulfill his dream when he graduated from The Citadel in 2004 as a Distinguished Military Graduate and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Branch of the United States Army. Nick then graduated from Ranger School and went on to complete seven combat tours and serve in many distinguished infantry units, including 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 10th Mountain Division, 75th Ranger Regiment, and 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vincenza, Italy. He also served at the Pentagon on the Joint Staff and as an associate professor of Military Science at the University of Southern California where he simultaneously earned a Master of Communication Management. 
Nick was a dedicated leader, always striving to improve. He fervently believed in being a “quiet professional” who led by example. And it was his greatest honor to live, work and fight beside soldiers for whom he cared so deeply. Among Nick’s awards and decorations, he earned the Bronze Star Medal with “V,” Bronze Star Medal, and Purple Heart.
His Army career even led him back to the love of his life.

After returning from his first combat deployment, Nick reconnected with his high school sweetheart and they married two years later on the bluffs of San Onofre, California. Nick had the gift of quick wit and was an avid Ohio State University and unapologetic Cleveland sports fan. Above all, Nick adored his family, loved hanging out with his nieces and nephews, and spent every spare moment spoiling his puppy “Polo”. Those who love him will miss him dearly, but we are all richer for having known him.

Nick is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Megan Epner; his parents, David and Rosalie Goshen; his brother, Nate (Brooke) Goshen; his sister, Alix (Aaron) Walker; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his aunt, Valerie Seese.

On Friday, November 11 at 2:00pm, a flag dedication ceremony in honor of Nick's military service will be held at the Veterans Tribute Garden of Silver Lake, 2961 Kent Road, Silver Lake, OH 44224. Immediately following the ceremony, a Celebration of Life will take place at 3pm at Silver Springs Lodge, 5027 Stow Rd, Stow, OH 44224.
