Listen to Obituary

Athena Fundoukos Curley, fondly known as Amy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 3, 2026, just 2 days shy of her 93rd birthday, in Akron, Ohio.

Amy was born in Akron, Ohio in 1933 and lived her life in Akron, and Sharon, Jackson, and Granger Townships. She graduated from Akron North High School and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Akron, where she was an active member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. After college, Amy balanced her time as a bookkeeper and stay-at-home mom. She also contributed to her local community with Witan, Akron Woman’s City Club, the Area Development Committee, and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

Amy was a devoted wife to George Curley for 54 years, and cherished their 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She fulfilled her dream of traveling the world. During her travels she kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, road a camel in Egypt, walked on the Great Wall of China, and enjoyed visiting her relatives in Greece and France. She loved classical music, especially Strauss’s Blue Danube, violinist Andre Rieu, and listening to her husband play the piano. Amy’s family and friends will forever remember her smile and joyful disposition, her dessert preference of a single scoop of vanilla ice cream, serving her guests Dove Bars, and the enjoyment she experienced on Portage Lakes pontoon boat rides.

Amy was preceded in death by her husband George Curley, father Theodore Fundoukos, mother Harriet Fundoukos, sister Mary Thomaris, brother Emanual Fundoukos, son-in-law David Cornell, and granddaughter Athena Hill. She is survived by her sister Despina Pappas of Boca Raton, FL; daughters Frances Cornell of Granger Township, Elaine Herwig (Robin Samuel) of Boca Raton, FL, Carolyn Hill (Frank) of Akron and son Harry Curley (Jennifer) of Pepper Pike; grandchildren Ryan Cornell (Kelvin Rivera-Olan), Vanessa Cornell, Mary Hill, Christina Hill, Katherine (Francisco) Perez, George Curley, and Audrey Curley; great grandchildren Matthew Cornell, Lilyana Cornell, and Elias Cornell.

The family expresses its sincere appreciation for the staff members of Home Instead, Arden Courts of Bath, and Suncrest Hospice. All showed amazing compassion and caring for Amy, and we are forever grateful.
