Augustus Lorraine Foster , 84, passed away at his home on August 20 in the arms of his wife. Gus was born in Rome, New York and spent his early years on a farm in nearby Cazenovia. He graduated from Union Springs Academy, studied at Atlantic Union College, and then joined the U.S. Marines where he served in the Pacific Theatre as a radio specialist. Following the military, he became a highly skilled machinist with a career spanning nearly 50 years. After retirement, he did a stint as a valet at Summa Hospital to keep busy!
Gus always had a story to tell and lots of opinions to share! He loved hiking the Metro Park trails, puttering in the yard and, of course, he really loved golf. His favorite pastimes were armchair quarterbacking for the Browns and Buckeyes and being with his Akron grandchildren: Jillian, Sierra, Wyatt, and Adeline.
Gus was a dedicated community volunteer well into his 80’s. Listed in the 1975 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America, he was active with the Akron Jaycees, The American Golf Classic and The World Series of Golf. He was instrumental in keeping the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron when the sponsor pulled out in the early 1970’s. He was a block watch captain for years and was a church elder who spent most Thursday mornings with his YMCA Bible study group. He attended an Oxford Round Table and volunteered as a trainman on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and with various local senior citizen safety committees.
A devoted family man, he will be forever missed by Shirley, his loving wife of 52 years; daughter Dr. Shannon Foster (Adam Smye-Rumsby); sons Scott (Kathy), Matthew (Elia), Raymond (Beth) and Augustus “Chip” Jr. (Debbie); as well as all his 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Per Gus’ wishes, there will be no calling hours. Cremation has occurred and committal with military honors will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman on Tuesday, September 6 at 11:15 AM.
