A gentleman and a wordsmith– Bruce J. Brian passed away on November 21, 2025 at the age of 83. He leaves behind a legacy of love, curiosity and quiet strength. Bruce will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his wife Helen, his genuine interest in his nieces and nephew and his lifelong passion for bridge.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Kermizis Brian; sister, Jennifer Brian and niece, Brittlynn Burkett; sister-in-law, Martha Kermizis and nieces and nephew, Ann Barrett (Steve), Michael Kermizis, Jr. (daughters Portia and Dilana), Lisa Kermizis Abraham (Craig) and Christina Kirby (Jim and daughter Sarah).

Bruce earned his degree from the University of Cincinnati and worked as an analyst for Columbia Gas. Beyond his professional life, Bruce was a man of curiosity, an avid collector of rocks, minerals, coins and stamps, who delighted in sharing the stories behind each treasure.

His greatest passion outside of the life he built with Helen was playing bridge. Through the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), he achieved the rank of Sapphire Life Master with more than 3800 points. For over four decades, he and his bridge partner, Jim Bachelder, played together weekly and shared not only the love of the game but countless conversations, language discussions and laughter.

Bruce and Helen’s love story was one of patience and devotion. They had a long-distance relationship, and their love outlasted the distance. In Columbus, they finally built a life filled with shared interests- crossword puzzles, sports statistics, and number games. They could play the same crossword puzzles and games without having to write down the answers in the puzzle yet solve them simultaneously. They found joy in simple pleasures: traveling, hiking, cultural outings, and quiet picnics near their home. Bruce appreciated good food, a fine Pinot Noir and a smooth Scotch, always paired with good conversation.

Today the deck is still and the world has one less bridge player and fewer tricks to play. Bruce’s kindness and wit will be missed.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joy and Fred Kerner for their exceptional kindness.
