D. Frederick Lohr, Jr., age 91 years of Akron, died Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Fred was born on September 9, 1934, in Madison County, Virginia to D.F. Lohr, Sr. and Jessie Carpenter Lohr. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Mary Ann Lohr Rabe and Jane Alice Lohr Lucus. Fred is survived by his brother, Thomas W. Lohr of Orange, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his long-time companion and best friend, Linda Keliar.
Fred served in the United States Air Force as an electronics technician. He received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and his doctorate in organic chemistry from Duke University. His professional career was spent in the research laboratory of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company (later Bridgestone/Firestone) and was awarded over thirty patents related to rubber chemistry. Fred was a member of the Akron Torch Club and a volunteer driver for many years for the Akron Red Cross.
In retirement, Fred enjoyed natural history trips to Central America, Alaska, Hawaii, and trips to national parks in the West. Fred enjoyed riding his bicycle on local trails, having done 4000 miles the year of his 90th birthday.
Per his request, private services will be observed by his family.
