Donald T. Primm

March 14, 1931 — April 25, 2025

Donald T. Primm, founder of Cascade Auto Group, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025. Or, as he himself would say, “He finally ran out of gas.” Such was the enchanting humor of a man who will be remembered fondly for his warm personality, generous heart, goofy dancing and charming sense of humor—qualities that endeared him to countless friends, neighbors, former business associates, and customers.

Donald was preceded in death by his mother Susanna, father Paul, brother Raymond, and sister Shirley. He is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Sally; his sister Patricia (Richard) Marquess; his daughter Michelle (Eric Thomas), his sons Patrick (Dr. Jane Beese) and Michael (Cassie) Primm.

Born on March 14, 1931, in Akron, Ohio, Donald grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. After graduating from Kenmore High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was soon dispatched to the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site) to build bunkers from which he and fellow Marines would witness an atomic bomb test that was part of Operation Ranger. He was especially proud to serve as part of one of the Marines’ first racially integrated platoons, advancing the mission of equality with courage and camaraderie.

Donald’s post-service journey began at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, but he soon pivoted to car sales—a profession where his charm and empathy shone. He treated everyone, from industry titans to day laborers, with dignity and respect, earning a reputation as a trustworthy and approachable leader.

In 1965, Donald founded Don Primm Auto Sales. With a visionary approach, he embraced the emerging presence of Porsche and Audi dealerships in the U.S., establishing Cascade Porsche Audi in 1969. Over five decades, he expanded the business to include 14 car franchises, culminating in Cascade Auto Group as it exists today.

Beyond his professional success, Donald believed deeply in giving back to the community. He was a quiet philanthropist, often assisting individuals in need anonymously. His legacy of corporate responsibility lives on through Cascade Auto Group’s continued support for children, families, and animal welfare organizations.

Donald was a member of the Greater Cleveland Auto Dealers Association and served as president of the Akron Auto Dealers Association and the Ohio Auto Dealers Association. His expertise extended to mentoring entrepreneurs through SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and supporting several nonprofit organizations. He served on the board of the Victim Assistance Program of Summit County.

A man of boundless enthusiasm, Donald packed excitement into his life—racing Porsche 914s at Sports Car Club of America events, running with the bulls in Pamplona on 7/7/77, and traveling extensively across Africa, Japan, and Europe. He was an avid gardener, an excellent cook, and a master woodworker whose birdhouses were prized auction items. His corny jokes, though infamous, were shared with unabashed joy.

In honor of Donald’s wishes, no public services will be held. Memorial donations can be made to the Victim Assistance Program of Summit County, 137 S. Main Street #300, Akron, OH 44308.

If you knew Donald, don’t be sad he is gone. Be happy you knew him—because he was truly happy to know you. In his memory, share one of his corny jokes with someone you love. It’s what he would have wanted.
