Richard (Dick) Bruce Rea, “Buckeye Strong”, born September 6, 1936, in Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully January 13, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering principles. He was the son of Evelyn and David Rea, and his life was marked by deep connections with family and community.
Richard's journey began at Buchtel High School, where he excelled as an athlete and was affectionately known as the "Buchtel Gazelle." His impressive athletic proficiency in almost all sports including football, basketball, track and baseball earned him recognition among his peers. He was President of Student Council, received the Manhood Cup, was noted as Most Popular and crowned Homecoming King in 1954, all a testament to his popularity and character. It was during these formative high school years, that he met the love of his life, Myrna Iris Lemley, setting the stage for a lifelong partnership.
On August 5, 1958, Richard and Myrna were married and eventually created a warm and nurturing home for their two daughters, Julia Rea Bianchi and Anne Marie Rea Adams. Julia, married to David Bianchi, has a son, Trent Winthrop Bianchi, while Anne, married to Alan Winthrop Adams, is the mother of two children, Reid Winthrop Adams and Sarah Pfeifle Adams Bundschuh. Richard cherished his role as a father and grandfather and embraced time spent with his family. Richard was preceded in death by his brother, David Michael Rea, and is survived by his brother-in-law, William Henry Victor, Jr. and nephews, Brent Rea and Ryan Rea.
His educational journey took him from playing football at the University of Akron, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, to The Ohio State University, where he earned his dental degree. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, where he further honed his commitment to duty and love for his country.
Richard established his dental practice in Ellet, Ohio. He had pride and compassion for his patients and throughout his 40-year career treated multiple generations of family members. He was a member of the Akron Dental Society.
A member of the Portage Country Club for 55 years, Richard served on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed paddle tennis and golf with his numerous friends where his competitive spirit shone brightly.
He was an avid gardener and an enthusiastic fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes. Known for his outgoing personality and his signature blue blazer with a United States flag pin on his lapel, he embodied warmth and friendliness. His favorite motto, “It is nice to be important but more important to be nice,” resonated deeply with all who knew him.
He enjoyed biking on the Towpath with Myrna and created cherished memories while covering thousands of miles. Many in Akron were familiar with the “IBIKE1 IBIKE2” on their license plates. They also traveled to numerous countries on their annual bike trips abroad.
Richard (Dick) Bruce Rea will be remembered for his strong moral character, life-long discipline, the joy he brought to those around him and for being a true gentleman. His legacy lives forever in the hearts of his family and friends. Go Buckeyes!
