Sally A. Miller, Ph.D., 71, of Wooster, Ohio, passed away on April 1, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with chronic illness.
Born in Canton, Ohio, Sally pursued her passion for science at The Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with honors distinction. During her time in Columbus, she met her beloved husband of 49 years, Chip Styer. Together, they continued their academic journey at University of Wisconsin, where Sally earned both her Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology.
Following graduate school, Sally began her career at an agricultural biotechnology firm in New Jersey, where she developed immunological diagnostic tools to detect plant diseases—early work that reflected both her scientific precision and her commitment to solving real-world challenges in agriculture.
Sally went on to dedicate 32 years to The Ohio State University in Wooster, where she was honored as a Distinguished Professor of Plant Pathology. A world-renowned scientist, she built a trailblazing career defined by research, mentorship, and service. Her work took her across the globe, where she collaborated with farmers in developing countries to improve crop health, strengthen food systems, and support local economies.
Equally devoted to her students, Sally served as a Ph.D. advisor and mentor to many who have gone on to make lasting contributions in the fields of biology and agriculture. She encouraged, supported, and believed in them, leaving a legacy that continues to grow through their work. She also provided invaluable guidance to local farmers, helping diagnose and manage crop diseases with both expertise and compassion.
In retirement, Sally found joy in the quieter moments—spending time with family and friends, crocheting, watching Korean dramas and British mysteries while adding to her enviable, nearly 7-year DuoLingo streak.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sally was deeply devoted to her family. She was fiercely loyal, loving, and steady—a constant source of strength and warmth to those closest to her. She was one of seven siblings and was preceded in death by her parents, Eileen and Stanley Miller; and her brother. Michael. She is survived by her husband, Chip Styer; her daughter Allison Styer (Eric) and grandsons Max and Milo; her daughter Carly Styer; and her son, Mike Styer (Shea). She is also survived by her siblings, Joan (Bob), Dave (Linda), Steve (Lucy), Terri (Thom), and Adam (Mary); and was a cherished aunt, great-aunt, and cousin to many.
Sally’s life was one of purpose, intellect, and deep love. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she mentored, and the global communities she helped nourish.
Sally will be laid to rest in a Green Burial Service 11 A.M. THURSDAY April 9th, 2026 at Foxfield Preserve at The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave SW, Wilmot, OH 44689.
