Francine A. Sylvis of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully Monday, January 5, 2026, at Concordia of Sumner in Copley, Ohio at the age of 84.
Fran was born in Massillon on May 25, 1941, to Frank and Doris (Simon) Sylvis. She graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1959. While in high school, she enjoyed singing in the choirs and performing in school musicals. Fran went on to get her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1963 from Ohio University and later earned her Master of Arts from Kent State University. She taught gym and second grade for Marlington Local Schools and later for Akron City Schools.
There was always a dog at Fran’s house, usually a Scottie. She loved to travel and had visited such places as Iceland, Ireland, England, and most recently, Alaska. Fran spent many years volunteering at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens.
Fran was part of a close-knit family and is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Sylvis; three nieces: Deb Waterman, Pam (Ned) Kimmelman, and Kimberly Tuza all of Florida. She is survived by cousins: Barb Berens and Chris Berens both of Bolivar, Ohio, and Nancy Quinn Simon of Canton; many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Sylvis; cousins: Tom Berens and Ed Simon; and a very special friend, Mary Verhoeven.
Per Fran’s wishes, there will be no services observed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, 714 North Portage Path, Akron, Ohio 44303; or to Summit County Humane Society, 752 West Portage Trail, Akron, Ohio 44313.
