Harold R. Von Wyl, DDS died suddenly on October 31, 2016.
Dr. Von Wyl was born in Canton on August 19, 1936 and was the son of the late Arnold and Chloe Von Wyl. He leaves his beloved wife of 57 years Carolyn; son, Hal, Jr. of Shawnee, KS, and his wife, Kathy, along with granddaughter, Kara and grandson, Eric; son, Jimmy of Greenville, SC, and his wife, Christine, and grandsons, Cullen, Reid, and Ryan; a sister, Marilyn Renner of Cincinnati; and sisters-in-law, Kathleen (Bud) Brauchler and Kathryn (Kay) O'Connor, both of Canton. Harold was affectionately called "Grandpa" by all of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Arnie.
Harold was a member of Portage Country Club, a past member of Firestone Country Club, a lifetime member of the Akron Dental Society, a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, a past President of the Walsh Jesuit High School Booster Club, and a past Secretary/Treasurer of the worldwide Golf Collectors Society. He was an avid golfer, one of the leading experts on the history of golf in the United States, an ardent supporter of his son's athletic pursuits, loved cooking, and spent much of his retirement working on his extensive gardens and landscaping.
Harold grew up in Canton, and graduated from Canton McKinley High School, where he played football and was on the swim team. He attended Ohio State University for undergraduate studies, Dental School, and Oral Surgery School. While in Dental School at Ohio State, he was a member of Psi Omega, the dental fraternity. During his college years, he also served in the U.S. Army.
Harold was a partner in Akron Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Group, Inc. which has offices in Akron, Stow, and Norton, where he was a well-respected Oral Surgeon, and one of the first surgeons in Ohio to do dental implants.
A celebration of Harold's life will be held with a Mass at St. Sebastian Church, 476 Mull Ave., Akron 44320 on Saturday, November 5th at 12:30. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dr. Von Wyl's memory to Akron General Hospital Foundation, Walsh Jesuit High School, or St. Sebastian Catholic Church.
