James V. Pickering Jr.

James V. Pickering Jr., age 85, of Akron, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

James was born October 9, 1940, in Shanghai, China to James and Martha(Burry) Pickering. James moved around a lot throughout his childhood attending many different schools due to his father’s military involvement. James eventually graduated from The Hill School in Pennsylvania. James then attended Harvard University and graduated with BA in geology. James went on to join the Army and completed service in the early 1960s. James then went back to Harvard and graduated with an MBA. After graduating from Harvard James was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber where he spent 40+ years.

James met his wife of 55+ years, Gayle(Thomas), in 1962 and later married in 1966. They lived in several locations, including Australia, Panama, Mexico and Peru. They eventually moved to Akron in the late 70s where they remained until their passing.

James always had a love for travelling and genealogy. James loved the Florida beaches, especially New Smyrna beach. James always had a story to tell and entertained family and friends by telling them. No matter what the situation, he was always able to lighten up the room with a story of some sort. James always cherished time with his family and friends.

James V. Pickering Jr. was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Gayle.

James V. Pickering Jr. is survived by his sons, John Clayton and Adam Garrett Pickering; grandchildren, Austin James and Kaitlyn Winter Pickering; and numerous cousins and friends.

Calling Hours will be held WEDNESDAY, October 29th from 4-7 P.M. at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. Akron, OH 44333.
