Jerome John Joondeph

September 20, 1943 — April 13, 2010

Jerry, as his friends knew him, was born on September 20, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York and passed away suddenly on April 13th after a brief illness.

Jerry was an All-American baseball pitcher at Rollins College in Florida where he met his wife of 44 years, Martha Brouse, a fifth generation Akronite. Jerry later transferred to Kent State University where he finished his undergraduate studies. He went on to The Ohio State University College of Law where he graduated cum laude in 1967.

After serving under the tutelage of Robert C. Brouse, his father-in-law at Brouse & McDowell, Jerry ventured out on his own with the founding of the law firm of Joondeph & Kelling. Today, the firm is known as Joondeph & Associates, LLC, a full service law firm that has served the Akron community for more than 30 years. Jerry joined the Ohio State Bar in 1970 and was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio; the U.S. Tax Court; U.S. Claims Court; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit.

Jerry adopted Akron as his home and with Martha were active members of the community, supporting numerous Akron area charities. Jerry was a long serving member of the Board of Trustees of Akron Children's Hospital. Jerry was also recognized for his outstanding service in chairing the Akron Children's Hospital Foundation for over 25 years. He was also a member of Bluecoats, the Akron Rotary and Akron Cemetery Board and a trustee for Old Trail School.

Jerry was a proud member of Portage Country Club, serving as Chairman of the Club in 1993 and a member of the Board of Directors for many years. He is fondly remembered for leaving his mark of ``Zorro' after each golf swing and for his quick witted one-liners both on and off the course.

In his later years, Jerry, known then as ``Pops'" devoted his energies to his family, most particularly, his grandchildren, Christine, J. Barrett and Bryce Stockslager, and to his friends in all walks of life. He was especially looking forward to getting back to his roots in baseball having just purchased a house in Arizona to be closer to his daughter, his son who resides in California and all things spring training.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha Joondeph and his mother, Alice Johnsen. He is survived by his son, Jerome J. Joondeph, Jr.; daughter, Laura Joondeph Stockslager, son-in-law, Matthew J. Stockslager; his father, Jerome N. Joondeph; and his siblings, Diann Banaszek and Robert Joondeph. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Christine, J. Barrett and Bryce Stockslager.

A private memorial service will be held in the spring to celebrate his life and accomplishments. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the Akron Children's Hospital Foundation, One Perkins Square, Akron, Ohio 44398-6176. Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel
