Peter (Kyung-Doo) Kim passed away at the age of 93 on Monday, August 24, 2026, in Hudson, Ohio.
Peter, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, was born on December 3, 1932, near Gwangju, South Korea, to the late Ha-rahn Jung and Chang-suk Kim, and was the youngest of six siblings. Following his college graduation, he was nationally selected in 1958 as a top special agent to study military tactics and missile technology at various U.S. military sites, including NASA. He played an instrumental role in installing and modernizing numerous missile bases in South Korea during the Cold War, which included the MIM-14 Nike Hercules and the MIM-23 Hawk surface-to-air missile systems. He dedicated 19 years to defending freedom from communism, serving as a military leader and as a liaison officer between the U.S. Army and the South Korean government. Beginning in 1976, he was stationed in Oman, where he established the first South Korean diplomatic and trading post. His career brought him to the United States in 1981, and he eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan.
Peter will be remembered for his deep faith in God and his profound love for his family. He enjoyed playing golf, watching Notre Dame football, and traveling with his spouse.
Peter was preceded in death by his late spouse, Helen; his daughter, Agnes Frenette; and all five of his siblings.
He is survived by his spouse, Dr. Juliana (Sung-Ran) Cho Kim; his children and stepchildren, Angela (Kevin) Gannon, Dr. Benedict Kim, Dr. Lawrence (Kimberly) Kim, Dr. Michael Lim, Susan Lim-Herlyn, and Eddie Lim; his grandchildren, Helen (Gannon Telfer), Peter (Frenette), Roman (Kim), Lance (Kim), and Emma (Kim); and his great-grandchild, Pierce (Telfer).
