In retirement, Steve remained active through gardening, reading, and volunteering. He also shared his compassion by delivering communion to shut-ins. He also volunteered with the Gardeners of Greater Akron, Senior Independence Hospice, and the Copley-Fairlawn School District.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Penelope Lou Cole Thompson; his children, Kirsten (Paul) Ransdell, Tressa (Jonathan) Hartsell, and Trent (Sara) Thompson; and his seven cherished grandchildren: Blythe, Paige, Pierce, Cade, Grace, Brynn, and Laurel. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Marks, and nephews, Jeff and Jeremy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Russell.
