William D. “Bill” Phelps, Jr., age 81, passed away at his home Wednesday, September 11, 2025.

William was born in Pueblo, Colorado March 20, 1944, and was the son of the late William and Wilma (Sanborn) Phelps.

He retired from the Ford Motor Company in Brookpark as a stationary engineer in the powerhouse. William served three tours of duty in The United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Maury (AGS-16), mapping inland waters. He was a proud Chopper and raced and rebuilt muscle cars for many years as a hobby.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jeff Scullen. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Zmersky Phelps, together 48 years; son, William Daniel (Stacy) Phelps; daughters: Nicole Leah Scullen and Andrea Phelps; grandchildren: Krystle (John) Hale, Raven Phelps, and Angel Phelps; great-grandchildren: Jaiden, Jackson, Haven, Skye, and Luna; sisters: Teena, Pam, and Yvonne; sister-in-law, Sandy Zmersky (Dr. Richard) Sunseri; nephew, Jun Ueno Sunseri; and great-nephew, Cooper Stanley Sunseri.

Bonnie extends many thanks to the Wade Park and Brookpark Veterans Hospitals for many years of excellent care and kindness.

Bill will be missed.

A committal service with full military honors will be held at 11:15 AM, Wednesday, September 24 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio 44273.

Services in care of the Billow Funeral Homes and Crematory, 85 N. Miller Road Akron, OH 44333 (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel).
