Charles M Vehlow Jr age 80, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021, succumbing to injuries sustained from an accident. He is survived by his cherished wife of over 55 years Paula Vehlow (Evans); daughters Gretchen Vehlow and Heidi Vehlow; grandson Charles M. G. Vehlow; sisters Joan Millins (Vehlow) and Barbara Ritter (Vehlow). Chuck was born and raised in suburban Chicago, Ill. Growing up he had many part time jobs including Cook County Constable, delivery driver for RC Cola and Nehi, bartender and short order cook at a local country club golf course. Chuck attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo where he received a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and joined Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Chuck went on to earn his master’s degree from University of Missouri before entering a career in mental health. While working at St. Joseph State Hospital he met psychiatric secretary Alberta Evans who introduced him to her daughter and his future bride Paula. As a Buchanan County Missouri Sheriff Reservist, he had many adventures while also serving as Assistant Director of Family Guidance in St. Joseph, Mo. He accepted the position of Executive Director of Akron Child Guidance Center and moved his family to Akron, Ohio in 1986. He found a second home with staff, board members, and clients he cherished. Chuck was then named Director Emeritus upon retiring after nearly 20 years growing the facility into today’s Child Guidance and Family Solutions and bringing international attention to the community through his work with the International Family Therapy Association.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a virtual ceremony will be available. No public service will take place at this time, but a Celebration of Life will commence at a later date.
