J. Doering Obituary

J. Frederick Doering, Sr., 93, of Bath Township, passed away August 17, 2021.

He was born August 3, 1928, in Marion, Ohio. His family moved to Youngstown, Ohio in 1935, where he attended schools, graduating from South High School in 1946.

Fred was preceded in death by parents, George H. and L. Glen (Irey) Doering; brother George I. Doering (Nancy). He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Gloria; children, John Jr., Robert (Linda), Roy (Theresa), and Chanté Hunter (Joseph); nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Following high school, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in Korea for one year. He was a member of the WWII and Korean Veteran Association. Prior to entering Case Western Reserve, he worked at Ohio Edison (First Energy) in Youngstown, where he survived death threatening electrical burns. After one year at Case, in 1949 Fred married Gloria M. Golden that he had first dated in high school, and they lived in Cleveland.

In 1952 Fred graduated from Case with a BSEE. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Association. Fred returned to First Energy, and they moved to Warren. That was the start of a succession of moves as Fred moved to jobs with greater responsibility. In 1953 they moved to Youngstown. Fred also taught part-time at Youngstown State. In 1959 they moved to Akron where they started to foster infants, ultimately having six, two of which were raised to adults. He attended the University of Akron and earned a MSEE. The family moved back to Marion in 1967, then Sandusky in 1970, and in 1973 returned to the Akron area.

Following his retirement in 1989, Fred provided expert consulting services in the area of electrical safe work procedures. He remained active in two national electrical code committees, as well as a national electrical engineering society. He was proud of his involvement in EEI and IEEE. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio.

For over 40 years, Fred and his family enjoyed their summer home on Catawba Island. He joined the Catawba West Harbor Yacht Club and the Silver Lake Country Club. Fred was active in the Methodist Church in the various locations where he lived. For the last 46 years he was an active member of Akron’s Christ United Methodist Church, chairing many committees.
