Leland L. Young
January 14, 1922 – October 29, 2020
Leland L. Young, 98, died Thursday, October 29, 2020 from complications resulting from a fall. His wife of 66 years, Mickey, preceded him in death in 2010.
The son of the late Charles Clair Young and Ruth (Plyler) Young, Leland was born in Jefferson County, PA, on January 14, 1922. He grew up in Punxsutawney, PA during the Depression.
In 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a B-24 pilot in WWII. After the war he studied at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh and earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Lee was employed by Alcoa Aluminum for 38 years during which time he contributed to several patents for furnaces used to produce aluminum. Following his retirement, he worked as a consultant on a variety of projects in the U.S. and abroad.
After several transfers, Lee and Mickey settled in the Pittsburgh area where they were longtime residents of McCandless Township. As a member of Memorial Park Church, Lee served as an elder and usher. After retiring he enjoyed singing in the senior men’s choir.
He loved to travel and his job with Alcoa sent him to many interesting places where he managed to combine work and sightseeing. This included moving the whole family to Australia for two and a half years, sharing adventures Down Under and in many countries along the way.
Lee could fix almost anything and was very interested in economics. He was physically active, playing tennis and softball well into his 80s, golfing, and working around the yard.
Throughout his life Lee was devoted to the care of his wife and family. He provided his children with invaluable life skills, experiences, and support. In his later years he moved to the Akron, OH area to be near his daughters. His survivors include his children: Jeffrey Young (Melinda), of Baltimore, MD, Kathy Young, of New Lexington, OH, Jenny Young and Betsy Young, both of Copley, OH, as well as his grandchildren, Nathan Young (Leslie), and Anna Nastasi (Anthony).
He had two siblings, Monabel Hurd (deceased) and Clifford Young.
Special thanks to the staff at Western Reserve Masonic Community for their attentive care and support of our father, especially during these last months when we could not be with him.
Due to current circumstances, a private family service will be held at a later time.
