Paul Janaq Mellion

Paul Janaq Mellion, age 75 of Akron, Ohio, passed away Monday, April 18, 2022, after a courageous fight with cancer.

Paul was a beloved husband for 53 years (and best friend for 72 years) of Susan (nee Stump), devoted father of Heather Mellion and Marc (Maja) Mellion, cherished grandfather of Mason, and proud step- grandfather of Julian and Aidan Stevovic. He will also be sadly missed by his sisters Patricia McDermott (Jack), Christine Mellion, Mary Lynn Mellion, and niece and nephew Carole Lisy (Ron) and Neil Yengling. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Virginia M. Mellion and John T. Mellion.

Paul and Susan’s journey began at age 4 at Trinity United Church of Christ on North Hill in Akron where they met wonderful life-long friends, participated in the youth group, and went on work camps together. Both Paul and Susan attended Buchtel High School (Learning Center) and graduated in the class of 1964. After earning his degree from Bowling Green State University, Paul entered the Army Reserves serving for 6 years. While attending Akron University Law School, Paul and Susan married in October 1969. Paul enjoyed a long career always demonstrating his total dedication to all he served, beginning as an attorney for the Akron Legal Aid Society, the Public Defender’s Office, and many years as Managing Attorney for the United Auto Workers (UAW) Legal Services. Paul was passionate about democracy and civil rights and he served as an election protection volunteer. As an avid soccer fan, Paul played soccer for many years and was a season ticket holder for the University of Akron Men's soccer team. Every summer he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the Jersey shore.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Friday, April 22, 2022 at BILLOWS FUNERAL HOME, 85 N. Miller Rd., Fairlawn, OH (330-867-4141). 

A private memorial to honor Paul will be held at a later date.
