Walter Wilde Obituary

Walter George Wilde, 93, was born January 30, 1927 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada to Arthur Wilson Wilde and Agnes (Cartwright) Wilde. He died Saturday, December 26, 2020.

Walter was a graduate of North High School (1945). He served in the United States Army during World War II in Germany. He was retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and Temple Israel.

Walter’s love of God and love of music led him to a life of music ministry in many churches throughout the area as choir director. He shared his gift of music as a soloist and singer in many local choruses and choirs, often accompanied by his son or daughter.

He was Director Emeritus of the Cuyahoga Falls Community Chorus where he sang and directed for many years.

Walter was a long-time member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he previously served as choir director, was a member of Brown Baggers, volunteer at Feed My Sheep free meal program, and was involved in many church activities/functions. While proud of his own Scottish heritage, Walt embraced Nan’s Welsh heritage and, as such, served as National President of the Women’s Welsh Clubs of America. He led the expansion and renovation of the Welsh Home for the Aged in Rocky River, Ohio.

Walt enjoyed most sports, but golf was his favorite. He golfed in leagues and with friends until he was 90 years of age. He would fish from sunrise to sunset while vacationing with his daughter’s family at their cottage on Georgian Bay, always with a PopTart in his back pocket. He didn’t care if he caught a fish or not. He loved his family, time spent with family, and was so proud of their accomplishments.

Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Nanette (2018); parents; brother, Arthur (Sally) and sister, Jean (Bill) Hazle. He is survived by his son, Earl (Geri) of Hot Springs Village, AR; daughter, Beth (Jim) of Stow, OH; grandchildren: Erin (Shannon) Wilde, Justin (Rebecca) Wilde, Kevin (Kristi) Gellner, Amy (Jeffrey) Gargas, Misti Wilde, and Jay (Melissa) Hoskins; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends.

Private burial was held for the family at Rose Hill Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Stephanie Crossland. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 W. Portage Tr. Ext., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223, or Alzheimer’s Association of Northeast Ohio, 70 W. Streetsboro St., Hudson, OH 44236.
